2020 Summer Camp Suspension - FAQ's

How did you come to the decision to suspend 2020 summer programs? 

The health and safety of our campers, staff, guests, and volunteers is the top priority at our sites.

Our leadership team worked closely with local, state, and federal health officials and guidelines, conference and camping industry leadership to help make the decision to suspend 2020 conference sponsored summer programs.

The decision to suspend summer programs was not reached lightly or without effort.  As staff and leaders worked to prepare a summer program through the lens of a pandemic, it was clear that it would be very difficult to safely, and effectively, offer the experiences and traditions we all love about camp.  Ultimately, your staff was of one mind and one heart that suspending summer programs at our resident sites is the best option at this time.

 

When will camps re-open?

Conference sponsored camp sessions will be suspended through August 29, 2020. Our staff will continue to work with local, state, and federal health officials and guidelines with the hope of re-opening our camp properties as quickly and safely as possible.  Fall events are still accepting registrations at this time.

 

I’m registered for a 2020 camp. What happens next?

If you have already registered for summer 2020, you are entitled to a full refund of any camp payments. However, we would like you to consider some other options for use of the funds you have already committed to camp this summer.

Dakotas UM Camps has always been a place where our campers experience Christ, Creation and Community. Given the necessity of suspending on-site summer camping events, we are anticipating facing financial hardship in 2020. Your donation will help ensure Dakotas UM Camps will come back even stronger once the COVID-19 outbreak is over.  Anyone who feels led to support camps is welcome to go to our website and make a donation.

The Central Camping Office will send an email to each camper. We will ask you to respond to that email with one of the following four options. We anticipate a high volume of email! Thank you for your patience as we process refunds.

Here are the options:

  1. Apply funds to next year’s deposit: Turn your refund into credit on your account, and use it for a future Camp Minnesota event.
  2. Donate to Camp Minnesota: Instead of taking your refund, make it a donation to support the continued work of Camp Minnesota.            
  3. Full refund
  4. Refund and donate: Do both! Consider taking a partial refund and making a partial donation.

Will off-site events also be affected?

The leaders of our off-site events are waiting until June 1, or later, to decide if they will be able to have camp. Please check the Camp and Events page listing for up-to-date information. Urban CROSS has been canceled.

 

Will privately contracted group events at the campsites also be suspended?

All of our locations are closed through May 14. Groups should contact the site director directly to discuss the camp’s ability to host your event.

 

What happened to the incentives I earned?   

Unfortunately, since summer camp programming has been suspended in 2020, financial incentives will no longer apply.  We will be offering our Early Bird and Bring-a-Friend incentives in 2021. New campers for this year will be considered new campers for next year too.

 

If I choose to use the money as a down payment for next summer and I am unable to attend - what happens to it?

We would be happy to refund you at any time. Simply contact the Central Camping Office at 855-622-1973 or camps@campminnesota.org.

 

How do I stay connected with camp this summer?

Please check out the social media platforms and website regularly! Our wonderful staff and site directors will be working to provide a little taste of camp through behind-the-scenes peeks, campfire songs, craft time and much more. Will our camps be okay? 

Yes, staff will work to preserve our beautiful properties, facilities, and mission as we prepare for a return to summer programming in 2021.  However, the loss of our summer ministry and associated camper revenue will be a challenge for our campsites. 

 

How can I support the camp I love? 

We are so thankful for your support of your camping programs in the Dakotas and Minnesota.  Now, more than ever, your support is critical to helping your camps to remain healthy, thrive, and move forward.  We appreciate your prayers and your advocacy for United Methodist camping programs. We would also welcome your financial gift during this challenging time.

 

Gifts may be given in the follow ways:

  2. Send a check to: DAK/MN Area - Central Camping Office, 122 W. Franklin, Ste. 400, Minneapolis, MN 55404. Check can be made payable to: Dakotas UM Camps (or Camp Minnesota)

You are welcome to designate your gift to a specific camp or cause, or simply allow the camping ministry to determine where it’s most needed. 

We’d also welcome volunteers to help with a variety of projects around camp.  Individuals, families, and small groups (under 10 participants), who will be required to follow all health and safety guidelines while on site, are encouraged to contact the campsites directly for details.

 

What about next year?

We are already planning for a great season of summer camp in 2021.  Programs offered in the future will reflect health and safety guidelines and recommendations set by local, state, federal officials as well as camping industry leadership.  We can’t wait to see you at camp!
